Historical database of equines in Crete

The dataset was created to document the occurrence of equines and their spatiotemporal distribution on Crete. Therefore, published osteological material - supplemented with information from Prf David Reese's archive - was collected, and horse 2D and 3D iconography were documented. Within the researched period (Pleistocene to early Modern times) equines (firstly Equus asinus) occurred sporadically from the Neolithic period. Equus caballus has been present since the Late Minoan IIIA period. The dataset is part of a project mapping the Cretan horse history from the occurrence of horses on the island to the present.
